Understanding GST in Australia

Australia introduced its Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2000, replacing the previous Wholesale Sales Tax system. Australia's GST is a broad-based 10% consumption tax that applies to most goods, services, and other items sold or consumed in Australia. The GST is administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and is considered one of the simpler GST/VAT systems in the world due to its flat rate and broad base.

Australia's 10% GST applies to most goods and services. The main GST-free (zero-rated) categories include: most basic food items (fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread, breakfast cereal, fruit and vegetables — but NOT ready-to-eat food, hot food, snacks, or restaurant meals), health services (most medical and dental services), education services (most childcare and school education), water and sewage services, and exports. A separate category called "input taxed" applies to residential rent and financial services — no GST is charged on these, but the supplier also can't claim input tax credits on related purchases.

Businesses must register for GST if their annual turnover exceeds A$75,000 (or A$150,000 for non-profit organisations). Registered businesses collect GST on sales, claim credits for GST paid on business purchases, and remit the net amount to the ATO. Returns are typically lodged quarterly or monthly (for larger businesses), either as standalone BAS (Business Activity Statement) or as part of the income tax return.

For international tourists visiting Australia, the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) allows visitors who have spent A$300 or more (including GST) with a single retailer to claim back the GST and Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) paid on eligible goods. The claim must be made at an Australian international airport before departure, and the goods must be carried onto the departing flight.

Australia's GST revenue is distributed to the states and territories according to a formula determined by the Commonwealth Grants Commission, making GST revenue sharing a politically significant feature of Australian federalism.

Reverse GST Formula

Net Price = Gross Amount ÷ (1 + (10 ÷ 100)) = Gross ÷ 1.1000

Example: A$120 total ÷ 1.1000 = A$109.09 net price, with A$10.91 GST.
