Understanding Sales Tax in Michigan

Michigan has a state sales tax rate of 6% with no local add-ons permitted. Michigan's rate is uniform statewide — every purchase in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, or anywhere else in Michigan is subject to the same 6% sales tax. Michigan does not allow counties or cities to impose additional sales taxes.

Michigan's sales tax is complemented by a Use Tax at the same 6% rate, which applies to purchases made out-of-state that are brought into Michigan for use. This primarily affects online purchases from non-Michigan sellers who don't collect Michigan tax.

Michigan exempts food for home consumption from the 6% sales tax. Prescription drugs are also exempt. Agricultural products, feed for livestock, and farm machinery are broadly exempt. Manufacturing equipment used in production is exempt, as are materials that become incorporated into manufactured goods.

Michigan has a notable exemption for prescription and over-the-counter drugs sold at pharmacies, which distinguishes it from states that only exempt prescription drugs. Michigan also exempts funeral services and certain medical equipment.

The Michigan Department of Treasury administers sales tax. Filing is typically monthly for large sellers and quarterly or annually for smaller operations. Michigan participates in the SST agreement. Economic nexus threshold in Michigan is $100,000 in annual Michigan sales or 200 transactions. Michigan has marketplace facilitator laws in effect.

How to Calculate Reverse Sales Tax in Michigan

To find the pre-tax price from a total that includes the Michigan sales tax:

Pre-Tax Price = Total Paid ÷ (1 + Combined Rate ÷ 100)

Example at 6% state rate: If you paid $107.00, divide by 1.0600 = $100.94 pre-tax, with $6.06 tax.
