Understanding Sales Tax in Washington

Washington State has a state sales tax rate of 6.5%, and cities and counties can add substantial local taxes. Washington has no personal income tax, making it highly dependent on sales tax for state revenue. Combined rates across Washington range from about 7.5% to 10.6%, with the Puget Sound metro area having some of the highest combined rates.

Seattle has a combined rate of 10.35% (6.5% state + Seattle city + King County + various district taxes). Tacoma's combined rate is approximately 10.4%. Bellevue is around 10.3%. Spokane, on the eastern side of the state, has a lower combined rate of approximately 8.9%.

Washington is Oregon's northern neighbor, and this proximity creates significant cross-border shopping dynamics. Many Washington residents — particularly in the Portland, OR metro area — regularly cross into Oregon to make major purchases tax-free. Washington State residents who purchase goods in Oregon are technically supposed to self-report and pay Washington Use Tax on those purchases, but enforcement is limited.

Washington exempts most food for home consumption from its sales tax. Prescription drugs are exempt. Agricultural inputs and farming equipment are broadly exempt. Manufacturing equipment and raw materials incorporated into products are exempt. Washington taxes most services, including many personal services and business services, which is less common than many states.

The Washington Department of Revenue administers the state sales tax. Washington participates in the SST agreement. Economic nexus threshold is $100,000 in annual Washington sales. Washington has marketplace facilitator laws in effect.
